Day 105: A HERO's Journey Through the Woods
Today was a day of contrasts for me on the Appalachian Trail. It started with a quick and easy hike, a gentle 3.5 miles to a road crossing, where we hitchhiked into Great Barrington. The morning was peaceful, with a mix of pine trees and open fields, and the only disturbance was the persistent bugginess of the air, a sign that we were entering the hot, humid, and buggy portion of the trail.
The trail magic at the road crossing was a welcome surprise, with a cooler of trail magic providing a much-needed boost of energy. I grabbed a canned coffee drink, and it was a much-needed pick-me-up. The morning sun was warm, and the air was filled with the buzz of insects, a constant companion for the rest of the day.
As we continued on the trail, the humidity became more oppressive, and the climb began. The first part of the ascent was steep, and the sweat quickly drenched my clothes. I nearly stepped on a snake, a reminder of the trail's wild nature. The climb continued, and I met Pokey, who offered me a Gatorade and a snack, a much-needed boost of energy. He also shared valuable information about the upcoming trail sections, a helpful tip for the journey ahead.
The gnats, a constant nuisance, persisted throughout the day, flying around my face and getting into my eyes, nose, ears, and mouth. It was a constant battle, and I found myself trying to outrun them as I descended into Ice Gulch, a narrow canyon with a small beaver pond. The industrious beavers were hard at work, a fascinating sight.
The second large climb of the day was a test of endurance, with a medium-sized black bear sprinting away as I turned a corner. The bear gave me a look, a moment of surprise and startlement. The rest of the day was a mix of climbing and descending, with a pine forest and a quick break at the Shaker Campsite. The final miles were a test of navigation, with bog boards to navigate and the dusk setting in.
Despite the challenges, today's hike was our quickest HERO to date, a testament to our determination and the trail's ever-changing nature. It was a day of contrasts, with the bugginess of the air, the steep climbs, and the surprising wildlife encounters. As I hiked into the dark, I reflected on the day's events, grateful for the trail's beauty and the challenges it presented.
The Appalachian Trail is a journey of discovery, and each day brings new experiences and lessons. I look forward to the next adventure, with the trail's ever-changing nature and the promise of new challenges and surprises.
